Chicago Solisit will be coming to Heaven Gallery to perform Las Cuatros Estaciones Porteñas (Four Seasons of Buenos Aires) by Astor Piazzolla (arr. Desyatnikov)

Chicago Solisti is comprised of musicians, students, artists, and teachers from the metropolitan Chicago area. They've performed individually across the country as soloists, orchestral and chamber musicians and hold degrees in performance, composition and music education from DePaul University, University of Michigan, Roosevelt University, Michigan State University, UT- Austin, Columbia College, Cleveland Institute of Music, Boston Conservatory and Cincinatti College Conservatory of Music. We're devoted to making great music and engaging our audiences in new and fun ways!

They want to devote ourselves to reaching out to young people and potential audience members who don't frequent classical music concerts often while maintaining the highest standard of performance and commitment to the music they perform! They hope to provide the cultural landscape of Chicago with creative and varied programming, in addition to presenting standard repertoire with fresh perspective.

The members of their ensemble realize the importance music education. Even though very new, the ensemble has already been engaged to give presentations and workshops at schools and programs in Illinois and Michigan. The presentations consist of short performances of chamber works, comprised of members of the ensemble and instrument demonstrations.

They are committed to supporting new works and plan to make contributions to the repertoire by presenting and actively commissioning pieces from contemporary composers.

 
They all believe in developing a meaningful relationship with the audiences that come to their concerts! Through social media and discussions at our concerts they hope to garner a connection to other musicians and music lovers on a personal level.

McKenna Glorioso is an American violinist based in Chicago. She first studied violin with Frances Simpson in Michigan and, most recently, has been studying with Aurelien Pederzoli and Ilya Kaler in Chicago.

She has worked on the chamber music repertoire with Stephen Balderston, Janet Sung, Elias Goldstein, Jason Moy, Olga Kaler, and George Vatchnadze.

In the past season, she has had the privilege to play for Shmuel Ashkenasi, Gerardo Ribeiro, Desiree Ruhstrat, Cyrus Forough, Mimi Zweig, and Aaron Berofsky.

McKenna has held the position of Concertmistress of the DePaul Chamber Orchestra and was Assistant Concertmaster for the North Shore Chamber Orchestra and the MasterWorks Festival Philharmonic Orchestra. She has played under the baton of conductors such as Dr. Cliff Colnot, Michael Lewanski, Mischa Zupko, Delta David Gier, and Darryl One.

An avid proponent of New Music, McKenna was a part of Ensemble 20+, the DePaul University School of Music New Music ensemble.

She plays a violin on generous loan by Dr. Wilhelm Schlag.

This month Heaven Gallery Classical Series welcomes the Zafa Collective. 

The Zafa Collective is a new music ensemble based in Chicago, IL, formed upon the idea that classical music should be inclusive and accessible both in terms of programming and performance. Zafa’s flexible instrumentation allows the ensemble to chose repertoire with no limitations, and the Collective presents programs with diverse aesthetics in a wide range of venues.

Zafa percussionist Josh Graham was recently announced as a Marimba One artist and Zafa is thrilled to feautre his marimba prowess at Heaven. The program will include works by Sanchez-Gutierrez, Kuster, Saariaho, and a world premiere by Connor Singh Vanderbeek.

Jun-Y Ciao, an experimental musician from Shanghai will be coming through Chicago while on a US tour to perform solo works at Heaven Gallery. His set will consist of solo improvisational works on reed instruments, as well as improvisational works with special guests including Jamie Kempkers (cello), Jonathan Chen (violin), Zara Acosta-Chen (clarinet), and several other Chicago musicians TBA.

The short opening set will be a new composition by Jonathan Chen for bassoon, cello, clarinet, electronics, and violin. The new work will be performed by himself, Zara Acosta-Chen, and Jamie Kempkers.

Short Bios:

Jun-Y Ciao is an artist, music and sound art practitioner, and a curator/organizer for art and music projects currently living and working in Shanghai and Huangshan. He is a member of the free music duo MTDM (with Tao Yi), the founder of the Free Music Collective of Shanghai, and a member of the artist collective ZUZHI (www.whereiszuzhi.org). Additionally, Jun-Y is a long-term contributing editor of the Art World magazine, where he started the column "One and Half Tone Music" (www.yishushijie.com/sesquiton/article/), and he is the founder of the independent art institution Where is the Zeitgeist? (www.whereisthezeitgeist.org).

Composer, improviser, and sound artist, Jonathan Chen, creates work through either conceptual foci or through experimentation with materials. His work for electronics often consist of thick layers of fluctuating sounds produced through multiple feedback systems, and at other times a more simple approach such as his installation Amplified (2010), which only involves the light amplification of a person’s voice. As a violinist and violist his improvisational work usually emphasizes timbre rather than pitch, either drawing from a wide palette, or honing in on a single sound. Chen has a PhD in Electronic Arts from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York; a Master of Arts in Music Composition from Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT; and a Master of Music in Violin Performance from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. His work has been published by Leonardo Music Journal (MIT Press), the Deep Listening Institute, Asian Improv Records, Interval, and Striking Mechanism, among others. www.jonathanchen.net

Cathryn Cowell has been studying violin since the age of three. At the age of eleven, she made her orchestral debut at the DePaul Concert Hall, after winning the DePaul Community Concerto Festival. Cathryn is a member of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra performing biannually at the Chicago Symphony Center and community concerts. She has participated in the Chamber Orchestra as the Eclectic Quartet. As a member of the Magical Strings of Youth, Cathryn has toured this summer as a soloist and ensemble player in Weimar, Handelhaus in Halle, Thomaskirche and Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Bach Memorial Site in Anhalt-Kothoen, and the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedachtniskirche and the Berliner Dome in Berlin.

In 2013 Cathryn was chosen to participate in the District 1 Illinois Music Educators (“IMEA”) as Principal, second violin. Since 2011, she has participated as violinist in the ILMEA All-State Orchestra and in 2014, she participated in the Illinois All-State Honors Orchestra. As a guest performer, Cathryn has presented at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the Hotel Riu Guanacaste in Costa Rica, the Junior Achievements Chicago Business Hall of Fame, the American Association of University Women, and many local venues, including telethons, weddings, and fundraisers. Recently, Cathryn participated in the Chicago Youth in Music Festival Orchestra, led by CSO Music Director Riccardo Muti

Illustrating the diversity of her repertoire, Cathryn is also an accomplished Irish fiddler. Receiving scholarships, Cathryn has studied music in Ireland as part of the Scoil Eigse. She has performed at national and international Irish music conventions including Parsippany, New Jersey, Washington DC, Chicago, and she has been a featured performer at major festivals and events including the University of Chicago, the Fleadh Cheoil na hEirreann in Derry, Northern Ireland, and the Fleadh Cheoil na hEireann in Cavan, Ireland, the Chicago Celtic Fest, and the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago. She is the youngest soloist on the album, The Girls of Murphy Roche.
